# How to Remove Ink from Carpet

Ink on carpet needs the Carpet and Rug Institute's blot-only route: for a ballpoint mark, 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol is applied to a cloth and never poured onto the pile, then blotted rather than rubbed. You can't lift a carpet into the sink or soak the padding, so lift the ink out onto the cloth and rinse the spot without over-wetting it.

## Before You Treat It

This page exists because the fabric changes the standard ink method. Do the quick checks first; they prevent a useful stain-removal step from becoming a fabric-damage problem.

- Check the care label before using water, bleach, heat or friction on the carpet or upholstery.
- Test the chosen method on a hidden corner or under-furniture edge; wait until it dries before judging colour or texture change.
- Work from the outside of the stain inward so the mark does not spread into a larger ring.
- Air-dry before applying heat; heat can set a remaining stain and make the next round less effective.

## Fabric-Specific Method

1. Blot up any wet ink first with a dry white cloth, working inward so you don't spread it.

3. Rinse the spot by blotting with a cloth dipped in a little water mixed with a drop of dish soap, then with plain water, so no alcohol or detergent residue is left to attract dirt.
4. Blot dry and let it air-dry; don't aim a hot hairdryer at it. On a mattress or upholstered seat, keep the cloth barely damp so you don't drive moisture into the padding.

## Why This Is Different From the Generic Method

A generic stain page can tell you what usually removes ink. This cell exists only because carpet changes the safer route.

## After the First Round

Judge the result only after the area is dry. A damp fabric can hide a remaining stain, and a fragile surface can look safe while wet but dry with a ring, dull patch or texture change.

- A safe round should reduce the visible ink mark without changing the colour, feel or finish of the carpet or upholstery.
- If the stain lightens and the fabric looks unchanged after drying, repeat only the gentlest compatible step instead of escalating immediately.
- If colour transfers, the surface roughens, the nap flattens, or a water ring appears, stop the home method and use a professional cleaner.
