# Launderwise Fabric-Care Reference Datasets

- Version: 2026.09.29
- Snapshot date: 2026-09-29
- Canonical catalogue: https://launderwise.com/data/
- Licence: [Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)

## Scope

Transparent compilation, not laboratory measurements. Launderwise does not
operate an in-house wash-test rig. These files compile published standards,
manufacturer guidance and named secondary references, preserving the source
scope and limitations recorded for each table.

## Methodology

- The JSON and CSV files are byte-for-byte copies of the public distributions
  described at https://launderwise.com/data/.
- Every registered distribution is required; a missing JSON or CSV file blocks
  package creation.
- `SHA256SUMS` and `manifest.json` identify the exact bytes in this snapshot.
- The collection version is derived from the committed modification date for
the canonical data catalogue, not from the machine clock.
- The laundry-weight table is explicitly secondary and approximate. It is not
presented as a standard or as Launderwise laboratory data.

## Datasets

### care-symbols

**ISO 3758 care symbols** — 36 symbols.

- Canonical record: https://launderwise.com/data/#care-symbols
- Human companion: https://launderwise.com/glossary/
- Files: `care-symbols.json`, `care-symbols.csv`
- Provenance tier: `standards-and-manufacturer`

Every ISO 3758 / GINETEX laundry care symbol, decoded with what it means and what to do, each backed by a cited source. Machine-readable companion to the care-symbol decoder at launderwise.com/glossary/.

Compilation method: Built from the glossary entries published at /glossary/: one row per care symbol, each carrying the same citation as its glossary page. Every row cites ISO 3758:2012; the symbol set itself is the care-labelling code published by GINETEX. The wording is our own reading of the standard, not a reproduction of it.

### bleach-safety-by-fibre

**Bleach safety by fibre** — 8 fibres.

- Canonical record: https://launderwise.com/data/#bleach-safety-by-fibre
- Human companion: https://launderwise.com/blog/what-fabrics-can-you-bleach/
- Files: `bleach-safety-by-fibre.json`, `bleach-safety-by-fibre.csv`
- Provenance tier: `standards-and-manufacturer`

Which bleach is safe on which fibre — chlorine (liquid) vs colour-safe (oxygen) — as a machine-readable table. Fibre rules are Clorox manufacturer guidance; an individual garment is always governed by its care-label bleach symbol (GINETEX). Companion to launderwise.com/blog/what-fabrics-can-you-bleach/.

Compilation method: Row by row from Clorox's published fabric-safety guidance, which is the bleach maker's own rule for its own product. The care label's bleach symbol governs any individual garment, so the GINETEX routing sits alongside the fibre rule rather than under it. The table is generated from the same typed module that renders the visible chart in the companion guide, so the two cannot drift.

### tumble-dry-by-fibre

**Tumble drying by fibre** — 7 fibres.

- Canonical record: https://launderwise.com/data/#tumble-dry-by-fibre
- Human companion: https://launderwise.com/blog/what-fabrics-can-you-tumble-dry/
- Files: `tumble-dry-by-fibre.json`, `tumble-dry-by-fibre.csv`
- Provenance tier: `standards-and-manufacturer`

Which fibres can go in the tumble dryer, and at what heat, as a machine-readable table. The dot heat values are GINETEX; the no-tumble fibre rules cite Woolmark, Woolite, RMIT and the rayon manufacturer. An individual garment is always governed by its care-label tumble symbol. Companion to launderwise.com/blog/what-fabrics-can-you-tumble-dry/.

Compilation method: The dot heat values are the GINETEX care-symbol definitions. The no-tumble fibre rules each cite the body that states them: Woolmark for wool, Woolite for silk, an RMIT textile scientist for elastane, and Asia Pacific Rayon — the fibre manufacturer — for viscose. Generated from the same typed module that renders the visible chart in the companion guide.

### laundry-weight

**Laundry weight by item** — 12 items.

- Canonical record: https://launderwise.com/data/#laundry-weight
- Human companion: https://launderwise.com/blog/how-much-does-laundry-weigh/
- Files: `laundry-weight.json`, `laundry-weight.csv`
- Provenance tier: `secondary`

Approximate DRY weights of common laundry items (children / women / men where they differ), as a machine-readable table in grams. Figures are approximate estimates from inthewash.co.uk — no international standard defines per-garment weights — and are carried with row-level provenance. Companion to launderwise.com/blog/how-much-does-laundry-weigh/.

Compilation method: No international standard defines per-garment weights, so there is no authority to compile from. Every figure is an approximate dry-weight estimate published by In The Wash, a third-party UK consumer site — that attribution is carried on every single row of the export, not just in the header. Two of that page's rows (a dressing gown at 6–8 kg, net curtains at 6.5 kg) are implausibly high and are deliberately excluded. The one hard fact around the table is the definition of a machine's kg rating: dry-textile mass, per EU Regulation 2019/2023.

### washing-machine-weight

**Washing machine weight by model** — 37 models.

- Canonical record: https://launderwise.com/data/#washing-machine-weight
- Human companion: https://launderwise.com/tools/washing-machine-weight/
- Files: `washing-machine-weight.json`, `washing-machine-weight.csv`
- Provenance tier: `standards-and-manufacturer`

Unpacked (net) weights of washing machines as each manufacturer prints them on its own spec page or spec-sheet PDF, captured 29 September 2026. statedValue and statedUnit are the maker's figure; weightKg and weightLb add the conversion. A sample covering nine machine types, not a census of the market. Companion to launderwise.com/tools/washing-machine-weight/.

Compilation method: One row per model, read from that manufacturer's own product spec page or spec-sheet PDF on 29 September 2026 — no retailer listings, no shipping weights. The maker's figure is kept as printed (statedValue, statedUnit) next to the exact source line; the other unit is a conversion. Models were excluded when the maker's own page contradicted itself, gave only a shipping weight, or had left the catalogue. A sample chosen to cover every type with at least two brands, not a census.

## Reuse and citation

The 10 data files are reusable under CC BY 4.0. Attribute
Launderwise, name the dataset used, include version 2026.09.29, and link to its
canonical record. `CITATION.cff` supplies machine-readable collection metadata.
No DOI is claimed in this package; add one only after a repository assigns it.

## Changelog

- 2026.09.29: adds the washing-machine-weight table (manufacturer spec
sheets, one row per model). The four earlier tables are carried over
  unchanged.
- 2026.08.30: initial versioned collection snapshot prepared from the four
public Launderwise datasets. No data rows were invented or re-measured for
  this package.
